Kirsten Lindsey, 28, of Louisiana, is facing a medical bill of approximately $50,000 following a severe injury during a cruise excursion in Honduras. The incident occurred on the third day of a Carnival cruise when Lindsey was participating in a beach excursion. According to her partner, Blake Ford, the injury happened during a rope swing activity.

Ford explained on a GoFundMe page established for medical expenses that a retrieval or tag line on the swing appeared to have been improperly connected. As Lindsey swung, the line reportedly tightened between her legs before she released, causing a "catastrophic injury."

Initially, Lindsey believed the injury was minor, but swelling and pain quickly intensified, rendering her unable to walk and requiring a wheelchair to return to her cruise ship cabin. Onboard medical professionals treated Lindsey for several hours, but the swelling reportedly grew to the size of a baseball. She remained in the ship's medical clinic for approximately 26 hours, incurring a $3,500 bill that did not cover physician services, medications, or procedures.

As Lindsey's condition worsened, the couple was informed that a medical evacuation to Costa Maya, Mexico, was the nearest option with airport access. They were presented with choices including air evacuation to the United States, transport to Cozumel, or remaining on the ship. Ford stated that the medical staff had to keep Lindsey awake at times, as she would stop breathing when drifting off from pain medication.

Opting for an air evacuation, the couple was asked to provide a $20,000 deposit, with an additional $30,000 due upon arrival in the U.S. They underwent the evacuation, traveling by ambulance through severe weather to the nearest airport for a private medical flight to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Lindsey underwent her first surgery at HCA Florida Aventura Hospital. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was unable to fly home and was driven back to Louisiana.

Upon returning to Louisiana, Lindsey received care at CHRISTUS Highland Medical Center. However, she was readmitted shortly after visiting the emergency room on July 18. Ford expressed surprise at her earlier discharge and relief to be under the care of their local doctors. He noted that medical professionals who have seen her injuries have described them as unprecedented, with doctors working to prevent permanent damage. Lindsey has since undergone a second surgery as she continues her recovery.
