Louisiana Teacher of the Year Accused of Attempted Murder

A Louisiana middle school teacher, recently honored as "Teacher of the Year," has been arrested and charged with attempted murder. Kyle Delaney, 25, is accused of shooting two men in Donaldsonville on Tuesday afternoon.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office stated that Delaney arrived at the victims' location, exited his vehicle, and fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene. One of the victims sustained several gunshot wounds. The motive for the alleged shooting has not been released, and the relationship between Delaney and the victims is unclear.

Deputies apprehended Delaney later that evening at a residence in Gonzales. He faces charges including two counts of attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of weapons, and criminal damage to property. Court records indicate he was awaiting arraignment as of Thursday.

Delaney taught seventh-grade social studies at Gonzales Middle School and was recognized as the 2024-2025 New Teacher of the Year, according to the school’s website. Ascension Public Schools confirmed that Delaney is no longer employed by the district, stating that as this is an active law enforcement matter, they are unable to comment further on personnel issues.
