Louisiana Man Charged in Family of Four Slaying; 6-Year-Old Fought for Help
Kaegan Jude Solet faces multiple murder counts after allegedly stabbing victims, including the boy's grandmother and mother, while the child sustained stab wounds and alerted neighbors.
Kaegan Jude Solet, 47, has been arrested and charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder in connection with a fatal stabbing spree in Houma, Louisiana. The alleged attack resulted in the deaths of Verna Mae Verdin, her daughter Letha Verret, Paul Verret, and Paul’s partner Krissy Lynn Parfait. A 6-year-old boy, who is Letha Verret's son and Verdin's great-grandson, also sustained multiple stab wounds during the incident.
Authorities apprehended Solet on Sunday morning after an hours-long manhunt. He was taken to a hospital for medical treatment and was subsequently arrested on Tuesday. According to Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office, Solet was known to the victims, as he is the father of one of the children.
The incident occurred at a home on the 200 block of Ashland Drive. Verdin, a great-grandmother, lived in the main house with her daughter Letha. Paul Verret and Parfait were residing in a camper in the backyard. The 6-year-old boy had been staying the night with his grandmother, Letha, and great-grandmother.
Despite being injured, the young boy heroically sought help from neighbors to alert them of the situation. He was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition and remained hospitalized as of Wednesday, with his father reporting him as stable and a fighter.
Solet, who was seen in police escort wearing blue scrubs and bright yellow footwear with his arm in a cast, is being held without bond at the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex. This arrest follows a history of legal troubles, including previous charges for stabbings. In January 2019, he was charged in connection with the stabbing death of Kemple Paul Scott Lovell, but a grand jury declined to indict him due to insufficient evidence. Months later, in December 2019, Solet was arrested and charged with attempted murder after a woman accused him of attacking her with a wine bottle and stabbing her multiple times in a motel room. He was found not guilty in that case in November 2023.
Officials are seeking home security footage from the area between Saturday evening and Sunday morning to aid in the ongoing murder investigation. A GoFundMe has been established to assist the Verret family with funeral expenses and to support Letha's minor children, who are now coping with the loss of multiple family members.
