BBC presenter Louise Minchin, 57, shared images of herself enjoying a holiday by the pool, demonstrating her resilience while recovering from severe frostbite sustained during an Arctic ice bike ride challenge earlier this year. Minchin was seen relaxing on an inflatable, wearing a mint-green bikini, despite a visible bandage on her toe.
Minchin had to abandon the 300-mile Inuvik Weekend Warrior Fat Bike Challenge in Canada's Northwest Territories in March due to extreme frostbite. The challenging conditions, with temperatures as low as -40C, led to her and a fellow cyclist experiencing severe cold. She was forced to use an emergency beacon and was subsequently hospitalized.
Five months after the incident, Minchin posted on Instagram, noting the ongoing challenges with her recovery. "Of all the summers not to be able to swim because of my still healing frostbitten toes, 2026 has been challenging," she wrote. She also mentioned discovering a way to be in the water without fully immersing her injured toes. A straw sun hat and dark sunglasses completed her poolside look.
Minchin's post garnered supportive messages from fans and colleagues, including Gethin Jones, Steph McGovern, and Dr. Nighat Arif. Previously, she had expressed uncertainty about the long-term recovery prospects for her toes, although her fingers had recovered well. She detailed in her newsletter that the frostbite was not immediately apparent due to the lack of sensation.
The challenge was intended to raise money for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Minchin had completed approximately 140 kilometers before withdrawing. After her hospital discharge, she expressed gratitude for the medical care received in both the UK and Canada.
