Los Angeles has been identified as the second-worst city in the United States for bed bug infestations, according to Orkin's 2026 Bed Bug Cities List. The city climbed two spots from the previous year's rankings, surpassed only by Chicago, which holds the top position. Detroit, Cleveland, and Indianapolis completed the top five cities with the most reported bed bug treatments.
The rankings are derived from the number of bed bug treatments conducted by Orkin in metropolitan areas between May 12, 2025, and May 12, 2026, encompassing both residential and commercial properties.
San Francisco and San Diego were also featured on the list, with San Francisco ranking 37th after moving up five positions, and San Diego landing at 41st following an eight-spot increase.
Orkin noted that the heightened rankings coincide with the start of summer travel, a period when bed bugs are more likely to spread through luggage and personal belongings. High-traffic locations such as hotels, short-term rentals, apartments, and dormitories are particularly susceptible due to frequent guest turnover. "Travel season brings excitement, but it also makes awareness especially important," stated Dr. Shannon Sked, an Orkin entomologist and national technical director, in the report. Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to control once established in a home or hotel room, as they can conceal themselves in small cracks, crevices, and personal items. Adult bed bugs are approximately the size of an apple seed, while younger ones can be smaller and lighter in color.
The company advises travelers to thoroughly inspect hotel beds, sheets, curtains, and furniture before unpacking. It also recommends keeping luggage elevated and away from sleeping areas and upholstered items. Upon returning home, travelers should inspect their luggage and wash any dryer-safe clothing on a high-heat cycle for 30 to 45 minutes. According to Orkin, shifts in the rankings can be influenced by evolving travel patterns, resistance to treatments, and public awareness initiatives.
