Police are investigating a home invasion in the Hollywood Hills after the man who reported the incident was identified as a squatter, authorities confirmed Thursday.

Officers responded early Thursday to a call reporting a home invasion in the 8500 block of Hedges Way in the Hollywood Hills West. The man claimed five armed individuals had broken into the multimillion-dollar mansion, attacked him, and robbed him.

He told authorities he was house-sitting the two-story home, which is situated near the Sunset Strip, and that he was staying there on behalf of the homeowner, noting a realtor sign in the front yard.

However, the actual homeowner saw a news report about the alleged invasion and sent a friend to check on the property. The friend arrived to find the man who had reported the robbery still inside the residence. As a news crew filmed outside, the man approached the camera, described his alleged ordeal, and then fled down the hill.

Authorities later stated that the man was not house-sitting, was not the homeowner, and they do not believe he resides in the neighborhood.

It remains unclear if the man faced any charges or was taken into custody.

Meanwhile, police said the actual suspects in the reported robbery were allegedly armed with guns. They reportedly entered the home for a few minutes before stealing a safe and fleeing in a gray or black Jeep. Surveillance cameras at the property were operational and will be reviewed by detectives.

This incident follows another reported burglary attempt in the Hollywood Hills days prior. A burglar was reportedly spotted attempting to break into the mansion of filmmaker Quentin Tarantino above Mulholland Drive on Wednesday afternoon. A gardener at the property alerted police after seeing the suspect, described as a man in his mid-30s wearing long black sleeves and black pants. By the time officers arrived, the alleged burglar had already fled. A search of the property by officers yielded no trace of the suspect, and no property was reported stolen.

Authorities have not indicated whether the two Hollywood Hills incidents are connected.
