A high-speed pursuit in Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon transformed a freeway into a scene reminiscent of the post-apocalyptic film franchise "Mad Max." An alleged car thief, driving a stolen white Mercedes SUV, evaded authorities for over an hour, narrowly missing a large group of dirt bikers who were illegally occupying the roadway.

The pursuit began around 5:15 p.m. after the vehicle was reported stolen in the San Fernando Valley. The driver led police through North Hollywood and eventually into the downtown area, near 8th and Hill Street by Skid Row. During the chase, the SUV was observed running red lights, driving in oncoming lanes, and riding on the shoulder of the highway.

Aerial footage captured the intense moments as the stolen SUV navigated through heavy rush-hour traffic. At one point, the vehicle approached a group of approximately eight dirt bikers. The footage showed one biker performing a wheelie directly in front of the fleeing SUV as it maneuvered in the right lane and then swerved onto the shoulder to avoid a collision.

The pursuit concluded when the unidentified driver crashed the stolen SUV into a parking structure in the downtown area. The Los Angeles Police Department reported that multiple suspects were detained, with at least one individual arrested for felony evading. Another person was taken into custody, though their charges were not immediately clear. The identities of those detained have not been released.

Reports from local news outlets indicated that the suspect may have been armed with a handgun, although police have not confirmed this or reported any injuries or major collisions resulting from the chase. It remains unclear if any of the dirt bikers faced citations for their presence on the freeway, as dirt bikes are classified as off-highway vehicles.

The LAPD established a perimeter around the crash site to search for any other individuals involved who may have fled the scene and advised residents to exercise caution in the area.
