Los Angeles experienced its third water main break in less than a week on Friday, as crews continued efforts to repair a major sinkhole and prepare for the reopening of Sunset Boulevard.

The latest rupture occurred around 3 p.m. near Paramount Studios and Hollywood Forever Cemetery, at the intersection of Romaine Street and North Wilson Place. The Los Angeles Fire Department closed Romaine Street while responders addressed the incident. No injuries or property damage were reported.

This break follows a significant rupture last Thursday at Sunset Boulevard and Holloway Drive, which involved a 110-year-old, 36-inch pipe. That incident led to a large sinkhole, spilled an estimated 17 million gallons of water, caused traffic disruptions, and submerged vehicles. Two individuals reportedly fell into the sinkhole.

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) crews have been working to fix the 36-inch pipe. According to an agency statement, their complex work included pumping out water, repairing the riveted steel pipe through welding, repressurizing the line, checking for leaks, flushing, disinfecting, and testing water quality. Sunset Boulevard was slated to reopen on Friday night.

Earlier in the week, another water main ruptured in West Hollywood at Santa Monica Boulevard and Laurel Avenue. This break involved a 6-inch cast iron pipe, over 100 years old, affecting water service for 10 to 20 customers. LADWP spokesperson Ellen Cheng stated that efforts were underway to restore service by approximately 4 p.m. on Thursday.
