Los Angeles Chinatown Named Nation's Coolest Neighborhood
TimeOut's annual list ranks the historic LA district fourth globally, citing its vibrant food and nightlife scene.
Los Angeles' Chinatown has been recognized as the coolest neighborhood in the United States and the fourth-coolest in the world by TimeOut magazine's 2026 global ranking. The historic district stood out for its evolving culinary and nightlife landscape, balancing its rich heritage with contemporary offerings.
Recent additions to the neighborhood include dining establishments like Firstborn and Café Tondo, along with Archives of Us, noted for serving what the publication deems the city's best matcha. The area also features a new music venue, Pacific Electric, which opened in March, and the upcoming second location of cocktail bar Mood Ring.
TimeOut highlighted Chinatown's unique aesthetic, describing it as having "pagoda-style roofs, hanging lanterns and pedestrian plazas," which contribute to its distinct character. The neighborhood is also home to established spots such as Phoenix Bakery and Philippe the Original, a historic French-drip sandwich shop.
Chinatown's historical significance is also noted, with its origins tracing back to the late 20th century. The original Chinatown was displaced to make way for the construction of Union Station, which opened in 1939. The current "new" Chinatown began to emerge in 1938 and has since become a significant cultural hub.
The 32-acre LA State Historic Park is another key feature of the neighborhood, hosting various public events. TimeOut suggests visiting during cultural celebrations like Lunar New Year in February, which includes a Dragon Parade and Firecracker Run, or the Mid-Autumn Festival in late September, known for its traditional mooncakes.
Chinatown was among four U.S. neighborhoods to be featured on the list. Other American communities recognized include West Town in Chicago, Illinois, at 18th place for its culinary scene; New York City's Financial District at 28th, noted for its Michelin-star restaurants and revitalized seaport; and the Distillery District in Lexington, Kentucky, ranking 40th after a major revitalization in 2008 that transformed it into a destination for spirits brands.
