Los Angeles Battles Mosquito Infestation, Surging West Nile Virus Cases

Los Angeles has been identified as the most mosquito-infested city in the United States, grappling with a significant surge in West Nile virus cases. This widespread infestation is attributed to a combination of record-shattering heatwaves and the influence of El Niño, creating an ideal environment for mosquitoes to breed across Southern California.

Residents have reported a year marked by persistent mosquito activity, disrupting outdoor life and leading to numerous bites. One social media user described the situation as "insane," noting that mosquitoes are prevalent everywhere, from backyards to vehicles. Another resident described nights spent combating the insects with an electric racquet, stating, "Our kids have been covered head to toe in mosquito bites… It’s an absolute nightmare."

Los Angeles County has recorded over 180 cases of West Nile virus this year, marking the highest spike in nearly a decade, according to the local public health department. The 'Culex' mosquito, native to the region, transmits the virus to humans after feeding on infected wild birds. In neighboring Orange County, vector control officials have collected a substantial number of traps containing West Nile-positive mosquitoes.

Adding to the nuisance are invasive 'Aedes' mosquitoes, often referred to as "ankle-biters" for their tendency to target human legs and bite multiple times. These aggressive mosquitoes exacerbate the existing problem faced by the city's residents.
