Longtime Nobu Chef Killed in Crash on Pacific Coast Highway

Ryo Uchimiya, a 51-year-old sushi chef who had worked at Nobu Malibu for 25 years, died early Saturday morning after a 16-year-old driver crashed into his parked car on Pacific Coast Highway.

The collision occurred around 6:50 a.m. outside the celebrity restaurant. Uchimiya had arrived early for his shift and was asleep in his vehicle when the Range Rover, driven by the teenager, slammed into the back of his sedan. The impact was forceful enough to send Uchimiya's car careening into two other parked vehicles, causing a chain reaction.

Uchimiya suffered multiple blunt force injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Los Angeles County medical examiner, who ruled the death an accident. A coworker told the New York Post that Uchimiya had been preparing for a catering assignment and intended to rest for about half an hour before his shift began.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department investigators believe the teenage driver was speeding at the time of the collision. Witnesses described the young driver as appearing stunned and confused. One witness reported hearing that the driver might not have possessed a license.

Authorities have stated there is no indication the 16-year-old was under the influence of any substances. It has not been determined if charges will be filed against the minor.

Colleagues at Nobu Malibu expressed deep sadness over Uchimiya's death. He was remembered as a talented chef and a kind coworker. The restaurant's manager confirmed that the staff, described as a close-knit family, are supporting Uchimiya's wife and two sons.

Nobu Malibu remained closed on Saturday as employees mourned their colleague. Flowers and notes were placed outside the restaurant in his memory.

Locals and workers in the vicinity noted that speeding is a common issue along this stretch of Pacific Coast Highway. Jefferson 'Zuma Jay' Wagner, a former Malibu mayor and local business owner, stated that dangerous driving incidents are frequently observed on the highway.
