Fourteen-term Democratic Rep. John Larson was defeated in a primary Tuesday by Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin, who ran on a platform of generational change. The race for Connecticut's First District seat, which has been held by Larson since 1999, pitted the established incumbent against a challenger seeking a shift in leadership.

Larson, who served in Congress during the Clinton administration, faced three challengers in the sprawling district that includes Hartford, Glastonbury, Bristol, and Windsor Locks. Bronin, who also served in the Obama administration, gained momentum throughout the year. Another challenger, state Rep. Jillian Gilchrest, is known as a progressive and a supporter of abortion rights. Ruth Fortune, the lowest-funded major candidate, focused her campaign on education issues.

On the Republican side, challenger Amy Chai, a medical doctor, stated on her campaign website that national divisions have led to increased stress and depression among Americans, advocating for change. The First District has not had a Republican representative since the Eisenhower administration.

Earlier in the term, Larson was notably vocal during a legislative markup regarding access to Treasury payment information. He expressed frustration with what he perceived as a lack of independence from his colleagues, exclaiming, "You will do whatever Elon Musk and Donald Trump tell you to do. Where's the independence of the committee? Where's the legislature? We're an equal branch of government." Larson has frequently criticized Musk and former President Donald Trump, including filing articles of impeachment following the arrest of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, accusing Trump of piracy and other offenses.

Despite the primary challenge, the Democratic Party is still considered favored to win the district in the general election against Chai and the Republican Party.
