Nigel Hewitt, often described as the RSPB's longest-serving volunteer, has dedicated over 30 years to the bird charity, playing a crucial role in species recovery. His commitment began during school holidays and continued throughout his 30-year career as a Barclays employee, during which he held various volunteer roles.
Hewitt stated that his initial motivation for volunteering was the opportunity to get closer to birds and wildlife. "Just being with wildlife, seeing wildlife, understanding wildlife, whether birds, mammals or insects, is mentally very good for me," he said.
Tim Hughes, RSPB's volunteering development officer, lauded Hewitt's sustained commitment and broad impact. "Few individuals can demonstrate such sustained commitment, breadth of impact and enduring legacy as Nigel," Hughes commented. Hewitt's extensive work has demonstrably aided in boosting bird populations and supporting the recovery of various species.
