Long Island Man Arrested for Fatal Hit-and-Run of Homeless Man

A Long Island man has been arrested in connection with the fatal hit-and-run of a homeless man early Tuesday morning in Lindenhurst. Daniel Gomez, 65, is accused of striking and killing 56-year-old Erik Ermanovics as Ermanovics attempted to cross Sunrise Highway near North Indiana Avenue. The incident occurred just before 4:30 a.m.

Police stated that Gomez, driving a 2012 Honda Accord, fled the scene after hitting Ermanovics, leaving him on the roadway. Emergency services transported Ermanovics to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The exact time between the crash and the arrival of first responders is unclear.

Following an investigation, Suffolk County detectives located and arrested Gomez at his home in Brentwood later the same day. He has been charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash involving a fatality.
