Long Island Athletes Combine Academic and Athletic Excellence for Ivy League Bound Success
Two Long Island high school seniors, both All-American swimmers, are heading to top Ivy League universities with near-perfect GPAs.

Johnny Macko and Sasha Karafin, lifelong friends and standout swimmers from Long Island, are set to continue their academic and athletic journeys at Ivy League institutions. Both achieved All-American status as swimmers while maintaining exceptional academic records, with Macko earning the salutatorian title at Mepham High School with a 101.82 GPA and Karafin holding a 100.9 GPA at John F. Kennedy High School.
Macko will attend Brown University, and Karafin will go to Yale University. The two have a long history of competing together on the same club team, Long Island Aquatic, and have trained extensively, often practicing up to nine times a week. This dedication has fostered a strong bond and a mutual drive for success in both their athletic and academic pursuits.
"We’ve always just been on the pool deck together," Macko told The Post. "We’re always cheering before our races — high-fives, ‘good jobs.’ It’s the little things that matter."
Karafin echoed this sentiment, adding a competitive edge. "I feel like we’re also ultra competitive sometimes." She playfully recounted an instance where Macko scored a 99 on the U.S. History Regents exam, only one point less than her own score.
Both athletes attribute their success to effective time management and a focused approach to their training and studies. Karafin stated, "When I’m at practice, I want to be all in at practice. I don’t really want to be thinking about anything else, and I feel like I could say the same for school. I kind of want to have my head in one place."
Macko, who won state titles in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events, earning All-American honors for his performance in the latter, sees a direct correlation between his academic and swimming performance. "It’s almost like a direct relationship," Macko said. "When one goes up, the other goes up."
As they prepare to conclude their high school careers with upcoming county and state championships, both Macko and Karafin have ambitious plans for their collegiate studies. Karafin intends to double-major in economics and political science, while Macko plans to major in pre-med. They anticipate that their paths may cross at future Ivy League meets, continuing their friendly rivalry.
"The academics, we already work very hard, so hopefully it’s not too much harder," Macko commented on the transition to rigorous collegiate academics. Karafin added, "It’s definitely helpful to have people that are high-achieving around you all the time."
