London Zoo Animals Celebrate Halloween With Specially Prepared Treats
Creatures from penguins to gorillas received pumpkins filled with their favorite foods as part of seasonal enrichment activities.
London Zoo offered its animal residents a festive Halloween surprise, with pumpkins filled with their favorite foods distributed throughout their enclosures. The initiative aims to engage the animals' natural instincts and foraging skills.
Humboldt penguins were observed enjoying a fish-filled breakfast served on pumpkin platters. Meanwhile, western lowland gorillas explored a dedicated pumpkin patch, selecting from a variety of pumpkins, peppers, and lettuce.
Daniel Simmonds, Animal Operations Manager at London Zoo, stated that Halloween provides zookeepers with an opportunity to devise new, seasonal methods for encouraging animal behaviors. He explained that these methods can include laying scent trails that lead to pumpkins or hiding food inside carved pumpkin creations.
Over the years, the zoo has extended these Halloween-themed enrichment activities to a variety of species, including Sumatran tigers, okapis, Komodo dragons, and Galapagos tortoises. London Zoo, located in Regent's Park, traditionally transforms into a family-friendly Halloween destination each October.
