London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been appointed to the House of Lords, a peerage granted by Keir Starmer. Khan is among 15 other Labour figures included in this latest batch of honors authorized by Starmer, shortly before he departs his role as Prime Minister.
Broadcaster June Sarpong and former UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea are also on the list of appointees. Notably, Sadiq Khan will continue in his position as Mayor of London, though it is understood he would not accept a ministerial role under incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
Other individuals named in the peerage list include Alison Garnham, Chief Executive of the Child Poverty Action Group; Alison Lowe OBE, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime in West Yorkshire; and Barbara Mills KC, Chair of the Bar Council of England and Wales. Cathy Ashley OBE, Chief Executive of the Family Rights Group, and Christina McAnea, former General Secretary of UNISON, were also recognized.
June Sarpong OBE, a broadcaster and charity campaigner, is among the appointees. Ken Macintosh DL, former Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, and British economist Kitty Ussher, a former Member of Parliament, were also included.
Marcus Davey CBE, former CEO and Artistic Director of the Roundhouse, and Martin McTague OBE, National Chair of the Federation of Small Businesses, received peerages. Nick Stace OBE, Chief Global Impact Officer at Howden Group, and human rights experts Parvais Jabbar MBE and Saul Lehrfreund MBE, co-founders of The Death Penalty Project, were also named.
Roberto Neri, CEO of The Ivors Academy, and Tim J Smith CBE, former Chief Executive of the Food Standards Agency, complete the list of appointees.
