London Deer Captured in Frosty Morning Breath Photo
A photographer captured a stag's breath in Bushy Park as temperatures dropped, marking the arrival of autumn.
As Londoners experienced a chilly morning, deer in Bushy Park were also feeling the crisp autumn air. Photographer Cristi Vasile captured a striking image of a stag's warm breath visible as it bellowed in the cool conditions.
Vasile arrived at Bushy Park before sunrise, relying on the sounds of the deer to locate them in the pre-dawn darkness. She positioned herself to capture the stag with the rising sun behind it, a technique that made the visible breath stand out.
"In the cold morning and low sunlight, the backlit stag's breath stood out in the air when he bellowed," Vasile stated. "When the air is cold enough, you can see the warm breath coming out of the animal's mouth, but having the sun behind him makes it really stand out."
The shot, while appearing spontaneous, involved careful preparation. Vasile noted the need to enter the park in darkness, predict the sunrise location, and find the optimal vantage point before the moment occurred.
