Lola Young Says Vaping Makes Breathing Feel Like a 'Chore'

Singer Lola Young has spoken out about the negative impact of vaping on her respiratory system, describing breathing as feeling like a "chore." Young, who has also been open about her past struggles with addiction and mental health, stated that vaping directly affects the lungs and airways, which are crucial for singing.

"Vaping may not affect the voice box just itself, it affects the lungs, the airways, the throat - it's all respiratory, it's all connected. So doing that can affect your vocal technique," Young said. "Singing requires controlled inhalation and sustained, efficient exhalation."

She explained that performers who struggle with their breathing due to vaping may find themselves exerting more effort for diminished results. This physical strain can also lead to significant psychological distress, with artists feeling a sense of loss or disconnect.

Young, who returned to the spotlight this year after a five-month hiatus following a stage collapse, does not recommend vaping to her clients. "As a performer, as an artist, you want to stay in the best health you can for your voice to work at its best," she advised. "We all know it's not the healthy choice and if you can avoid it - absolutely."

Young has previously shared details about her battles with cocaine dependency and her diagnoses of schizoaffective disorder and ADHD in her teenage years. BBC Newsbeat has reached out to her representatives for comment.
