Logan Marshall-Green Discusses 'Marshals' Season 2, Character's Health Battle and Relationships

The second season of "Marshals" picks up immediately after its first season finale, with U.S. Marshal Pete "Cal" Calvin, portrayed by Logan Marshall-Green, and Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel) caught in a gunfight. They soon identify Tom Weaver, a rancher and criminal, as the perpetrator behind the attacks and the raid on East Camp.

Weaver's actions escalate when he abducts Kayce Dutton's son, Tate, luring Kayce into a confrontation in Wyoming. Cal and the Marshals team mobilize to assist Kayce in the ensuing fight.

On-Screen Action and Personal Challenges

Marshall-Green shared his enthusiasm for the stunt work featured in "Marshals," noting his preference for performing stunts himself to maintain character authenticity and ensure a seamless edit. "I’ve always viewed stunts as part of the job. My stunt double’s job is to keep me safe, but also to support me if I want to do certain things myself," he explained. He emphasized the necessity of stunt professionals while also highlighting the potential for weaker editing when relying heavily on doubles.

Beyond the action, the season delves into Cal's personal battle with a cancer diagnosis. Marshall-Green elaborated on Cal's determination to continue working while undergoing treatment, stemming from his background as a Navy SEAL. "He’s done hard things before, but I think you’ll see that he’s biting off a little more than he can chew as the season goes on," the actor noted.

Character Dynamics and Relationships

Reflecting on the survival of Cal and Belle during the attack, Marshall-Green acknowledged that such shared peril can indirectly strengthen their bond, particularly given their feelings for each other. However, he expressed skepticism about the long-term viability of their relationship, describing it as potentially "dysfunctional."

"Do I believe the timing is right for the two of them? No, I don’t. I think it is a dysfunctional relationship," Marshall-Green stated. "She’s just getting out of a dysfunctional marriage... I don’t know if Cal’s and Belle’s connection is long for this world."

Cal's diagnosis also weighs heavily on his relationship with Maddie. Marshall-Green explained that Cal is acutely aware of the potential impact of his illness on those close to him, especially given his history as an absent father. Navigating this new reality with Maddie requires careful consideration.

Character Evolution

Marshall-Green anticipates audiences will witness a "devolution" in Cal's character arc this season. The formidable SEAL will be humbled by his fight against cancer, an adversary he perceives as greater than any he has faced before. This struggle is expected to bring a degree of sadness but also humility, leading to a softening in his relationships and his leadership style.

"This big tough guy SEAL is going to be humbled by cancer, which is a much bigger enemy than he’s faced before," Marshall-Green said. "Unfortunately, there’s some real sadness to Cal’s story, but also humility. He softens a bit in some of his relationships and as a team leader."

The season also emphasizes the increasing role of technicians within the Marshals team, assisting Cal in piecing together clues and understanding the larger threats at play. The dynamic between Cal and Kayce will continue to be a focal point, with the two needing to rely on each other as the season progresses, leading to a significant secret shared between them.
