Singer Lizzo recently addressed a 20-pound weight gain, attributing societal pressures, particularly on women in the spotlight, to a pervasive "system of oppression." In an interview with The Guardian, the Grammy-winning artist stated that this system is "unrelenting" and aims to make individuals feel inadequate about themselves.
"There’s a system of oppression that is constantly putting pressure on, especially women and especially women in the spotlight," Lizzo said. "It won’t stop until you’ve bought every product and you’ve bought into every lie and turned it in on yourself. That system is working at an all-time high right now."
Lizzo, who unveiled a significant weight loss transformation in early 2025, shared that she had reached a weight not seen since 2014. While acknowledging the reasons for her past weight loss were multifaceted, she noted that her physical weight had been causing joint pain and aches. She also described a period of withdrawing from the internet, focusing instead on her body, lifestyle, and routines.
"I was in a place where my physical weight was causing joint pain and aches," she told The Guardian. "I also got to the point where I came off the internet, and all I had was the studio and my thoughts, so I poured myself into the things I could control… My body, my lifestyle, my routines and habits … and this is who I am today."
Since 2025, Lizzo has been open about her body journey, frequently sharing updates with her followers. In a 2025 interview with Women's Health, she expressed satisfaction with her current appearance, despite still identifying as plus-size. "Body positivity has nothing to do with staying the same," she stated. "Body positivity is the radical act of daring to exist loudly and proudly in a society that told you you shouldn’t exist."
