Liverpool Secures Win Through Strong Defense Amidst Attacking Concerns
Manager Andoni Iraola praises defensive solidity in a hard-fought victory, but calls for improvement from his attacking players.
Liverpool's defense proved a sturdy foundation in their recent victory at Bournemouth, marking a third consecutive Premier League clean sheet. Manager Andoni Iraola, returning to his former club, acknowledged the team's improved defensive organization while highlighting areas for offensive growth. The win, secured by a goal from Alexander Isak, continues Liverpool's unbeaten start under Iraola, who has not lost any of his first five league games in charge.
Iraola's side has now kept three consecutive clean sheets, a feat not achieved by Liverpool since September 2024. The defensive line, featuring Virgil van Dijk and the emerging Jeremy Jacquet, has shown increasing cohesion. Goalkeeper Alisson and center-back Van Dijk were particularly instrumental in the recent match, with Alisson making a crucial save in the first half. Jacquet, a summer signing from Rennes, has become a regular starter and earned his first international call-up for France, a development praised by both Van Dijk and Iraola.
"The more times they play together, the more solid the defensive line becomes," Iraola noted. "Virgil [van Dijk], Jeremy [Jacquet], Ronald [Araujo] and Milos [Kerkez] - they're getting the connections and becoming more solid."
Despite the defensive success, Iraola expressed a need for more from his attackers. While Cody Gakpo showed flashes of form, Florian Wirtz had a quiet first half, and Bradley Barcola is still seeking his first goal or assist for the club. Iraola acknowledged Isak's contributions but emphasized the striker's role in facilitating attacking play and securing possession in the opponent's half.
"A striker's job is like this. He had a couple of crosses that he did not hit properly or control but in the end he has to help us to be closer to the box, to play in the opposition's half and have more meaningful possession," Iraola said of Isak. "And then if the team is playing there, he will receive rewards in terms of goal."
Liverpool currently sits with nine points from a possible 15 in the Premier League. Iraola, 44, has matched a club record set by Joe Fagan in 1983 for the longest unbeaten start to a league tenure.
The team faces a demanding schedule in the coming weeks, including matches against top-four teams and commitments in the Champions League and Carabao Cup. Iraola stressed the importance of adaptation and readiness for the intensive period following the international break.
"Overall, we have definitely improved since the first games," Iraola stated. "Some of the things we still need to improve. I'm happy that it is the third league clean sheet in the row. Today is a difficult game - you never play comfortable here, Bournemouth does not allow you to play comfortably, they put you under pressure and you have to adapt and you have to win these kind of games."
