Liverpool Football Club has confirmed the signing of Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan, with an option to purchase the player at the end of the campaign. The 27-year-old defender completed his medical in Merseyside on Sunday, August 10, 2026.

The Uruguayan international's arrival aims to address a growing defensive crisis for manager Andoni Iraola, with several key center-backs sidelined. The Premier League season is set to commence against Newcastle in less than two weeks, and captain Virgil van Dijk remains Liverpool's only fully fit senior center-back.

Joe Gomez sustained a muscle injury during Liverpool's first pre-season match, while young center-back Giovanni Leoni is still recovering from an ACL injury. New signing Jeremy Jacquet has yet to feature this summer.

Araujo expressed his eagerness to join the club, stating, "I can't wait to get started. I'm very, very happy. I'm excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history. I'm excited to meet my teammates, excited to get started playing, and I'm very motivated and really up for getting going."

He further commented on the move, calling it "the ideal move for me at this stage in my career" and "a move that was necessary." Araujo indicated that his transfer from Barcelona, where he spent eight years, was prompted by discussions with coach Hansi Flick, which suggested he would not be a guaranteed starter. He anticipates playing more minutes under Iraola.

The defender provides Liverpool with valuable experience and versatility, capable of playing at center-back and right-back. Araujo joined Barcelona B in 2018, moving to the first team in 2020, and has made over 200 appearances for the club. However, he found himself lower in the defensive pecking order at Barcelona, behind players like Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin.
