Liverpool Football Club is engaged in discussions with a consortium led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia for a strategic minority investment. The club's CEO, Billy Hogan, confirmed the talks, stating that the Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which owns Liverpool, has always been open to investment that benefits the club.
A deal with Bhatia's consortium, if completed, would reportedly value Liverpool FC at more than £4.5 billion, according to the Financial Times. Hogan, speaking from New York where the club is on its pre-season tour, emphasized that this potential investment is not an indication of FSG stepping away from their ownership. FSG also owns the Major League Baseball franchise, the Boston Red Sox.
Hogan highlighted Liverpool's significant global fanbase, with over 26 million supporters in the USA alone, underscoring the strategic importance of the American market for the club's growth. He described the past year as "super difficult" for the club but stressed that FSG remains committed to the project and sees substantial opportunities for continued development.
"Change is inevitable," Hogan stated, reflecting on the club's trajectory. He asserted that Liverpool has not yet reached its peak and is well-positioned for further expansion. The club's focus remains on driving overall revenues, building the club, and achieving on-pitch success, with the goal of winning trophies each season.
Financially, Liverpool has shown strong performance, ranking fifth in the Deloitte Football Money League and recording the highest revenue in the Premier League at £702 million. Hogan confirmed that any capital generated from investments is reinvested back into the club, aligning with FSG's long-standing strategy since acquiring Liverpool for £300 million in 2010. The aim is to ensure the club's sustainable operation while pursuing growth and success.
The club is currently in the United States for its pre-season tour, which includes a match against Wrexham at Yankee Stadium in New York. This tour highlights Liverpool's significant presence and engagement with its American fanbase.
