Liverpool Faces Striker Dilemma Ahead of Manchester City Clash

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola finds himself in a challenging position regarding his central striker choice for the upcoming match against Manchester City, as both Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo have been ruled out due to injuries sustained during the international break. This leaves Lewis Koumas as the team's only recognized No. 9, despite the 21-year-old having yet to start a Premier League game.

Despite the limited options, Iraola expressed confidence in Koumas's readiness. "Koumas has our trust. I don't think it's a big surprise," Iraola stated. "I have always liked the player. He has already shown in important minutes that he is ready to go."

While Koumas is the sole natural center forward, Iraola indicated that other players, such as wingers who have previously played in a central role for other teams, could be deployed in the position. He suggested that the team would field a lineup capable of competing throughout the match.

Florian Wirtz, Bradley Barcola, and Victor Munoz are potential options to play centrally. Iraola also noted that Federico Chiesa could be considered, though he is currently lacking match fitness after an injury-plagued start to the season.

Regarding the absences of Gakpo and Isak, Iraola provided details on their injuries. Gakpo sustained an ankle injury, which he has experienced previously and is currently managing. "He is doing things individually but he isn't ready for Sunday," the manager said. Isak is dealing with a minor thigh injury. "It's not a massive injury, it's a small injury," Iraola commented, adding that both players' injuries do not appear to be long-term.

Iraola also commented on the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Manchester City's Premier League charges, acknowledging it as an unwelcome distraction. "I think uncertainty is not good for anyone involved but there is the process ongoing and we have to be patient like everyone else and see what happens at the end," he remarked.
