The LIV Golf Team Championship, originally slated for August in Michigan, has been officially canceled and rescheduled to take place in Indianapolis. This change follows weeks of speculation about the event's feasibility and comes after LIV Golf announced a new, undisclosed investor intended to sustain the league beyond 2027.

The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), the league's primary financier, had previously indicated it would cease funding LIV Golf after the 2026 season. However, the rescheduling of the Team Championship suggests a continuation of PIF support.

LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil stated that the league is "reimagining LIV Golf as a fundamentally new League owned by the players and anchored in a sustainable business model." He added that Indianapolis would serve as a "fitting finale for the League as fans have known it and the starting point for what we believe it can become."

Prior to the official announcement, rumors circulated about the Team Championship's cancellation, with Cleeks captain Martin Kaymer deeming the $40 million event "highly unlikely" to proceed as planned. The LIV Indianapolis event, scheduled for August 20-23, is now set to be the final competition of the season.

Reports had also indicated that preparations at The Cardinal at Saint John's, the Michigan venue, had not yet commenced. The cancellation of LIV Michigan marks the second event on LIV's 2026 calendar to be scrapped, following the earlier decision to cancel LIV New Orleans.

Regarding the league's long-term future, O'Neil announced on August 5 that a lead investor has been secured. "LIV Golf has an agreement in place with a lead investor, signed by the investor and approved by the Board, to anchor the transaction and play a key role in supporting the path forward for the League’s next era, driven by and for the players," O'Neil said. He indicated a goal to finalize this transaction in September.

This next phase will reportedly see players become majority equity holders in LIV Golf, a development O'Neil described as a first for a major global sports league. Details about the 2027 schedule and participating players remain unclear, though the plan outlines 10 events, split evenly between the United States and international locations.
