LIV Golf's season-ending team championship in Michigan is reportedly canceled, with multiple contractors indicating that travel and accommodations have been rescinded and payments are outstanding. This development follows earlier reports that the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) would cease its funding for the breakaway golf circuit.
The championship, scheduled for August 27-30, was set to offer a substantial $40 million purse, with $11.2 million designated for the winning team. The reported cancellation casts further doubt on the financial viability of LIV Golf.
This news contrasts with statements made by LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil in June, who described the PIF as an "incredible organization" and assured that the circuit was "full steam ahead." O'Neil had stated that the PIF had been "terrific partners" and that LIV Golf was funded through the season.
Reports from early 2026 indicated that LIV Golf's monthly spending averaged $100 million in 2024 and 2025. For the 2026 season, the PIF reportedly approved a $266.6 million capital injection.
Earlier in the year, the PIF officially announced its intention to cut funding to LIV Golf. While the PIF's statement indicated funding would continue through the remainder of the 2026 season, the reported cancellation of the finale suggests an earlier withdrawal of support.
This would be the second LIV event on the original 2026 calendar to be affected. The LIV New Orleans event, initially scheduled for late June, was postponed in April, with rumors of a fall rescheduling now appearing unlikely.
LIV Golf's next scheduled events are in New York from August 6-9, followed by Indianapolis from August 20-23. LIV Golf did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the report of the team championship cancellation. A source familiar with the situation told OutKick that LIV continues to engage in positive discussions with prospective investors for a future iteration of the circuit.
