'Little House on the Prairie' Cast Recalls Brutal Filming Conditions

Cast members from the beloved television series "Little House on the Prairie" have shared accounts of harsh filming conditions, including extreme heat that led to actors fainting on set. The revelations emerged during a podcast hosted by Patrick Labyorteaux, who starred as Andy Garvey in the show.

Alison Arngrim, known for her role as Nellie Oleson, described her first day of filming as "complete chaos and confusion." She recalled arriving without her character's signature curls and then, shortly after, passing out on location due to the heat. "So, I was off to just a rousing start right there," Arngrim said.

She further explained that the heat in Simi Valley, where the show was filmed, was so intense that the onset of summer was often marked by cast members fainting. "It's like basically how to not pass out was the challenge," Arngrim stated. She recounted an incident where actor Sean Penn, then a child actor, also fainted. "Penn, who was a child at the time, 'didn't wake up and come back to work. That was it, he was done for the day.' That's when they decided maybe it was not just me, that it was actually that hot."

Fellow cast members Dean Butler, Pamela Roylance, and Jennifer Donati, along with Tracy and Victor French (children of the late actor Victor French), also participated in the podcast discussion. Butler acknowledged the significant heat, noting that the challenge was to employ any strategy to cope. He expressed sympathy for the female cast members, who wore dresses, petticoats, and stockings, in contrast to the men's simpler attire of shirts, pants, and boots.

Roylance shared that during a scene filmed in particularly sweltering weather, Michael Landon, who served as the show's executive producer, writer, director, and star, allowed her to film with her blouse unbuttoned and sleeves rolled up. She also mentioned receiving a small fan from co-star Stan Ivar, which she could wear to keep cool.

Arngrim also spoke about her least favorite episodes, which often involved sporting events. She recalled sitting in bleachers under extreme heat for hours while crew members filmed reaction shots. During one such shoot, Charlotte Stewart, who played Miss Beadle, reportedly lost consciousness but remained upright, unnoticed by the crew.

Jennifer Donati, who played Baby Rose Wilder as an infant alongside her twin sister, humorously remarked that she was likely the most pampered cast member, as precautions were taken to ensure she did not overheat.

"Little House on the Prairie," loosely based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's books, aired on NBC from 1974 to 1983. The series chronicled the Ingalls family's life in Walnut Grove, Minnesota, during the late 19th century, with Michael Landon portraying patriarch Charles Ingalls and Melissa Gilbert playing his daughter, Laura.
