Lions Pause Contract Talks With Star Tight End Sam LaPorta

The Detroit Lions have halted contract extension discussions with their star tight end, Sam LaPorta. The decision means the All-Pro player is currently on track to become an unrestricted free agent in the 2027 offseason, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Talks between LaPorta and the Lions reportedly occurred during the initial weeks of the current NFL season. Should LaPorta reach free agency, he is expected to be a highly sought-after player.

Sources indicate that LaPorta could secure a deal making him one of the highest-paid tight ends in the league if negotiations resume. The 25-year-old is in his fourth year and has been playing approximately 90 percent of the team's offensive snaps. Through the first three games of the season, he has recorded 14 receptions for 144 yards and one touchdown. LaPorta is also noted for his blocking abilities, earning a 76.8 blocking grade from Pro Football Focus, ranking fourth among tight ends entering Week 4.

LaPorta is returning from a season-ending back surgery he underwent last year. The failure to reach an agreement in the first four weeks of the season suggests a significant gap between the player and the team.

The Lions have a recent history of prioritizing and retaining young talent. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs signed a three-year, $67.5 million extension through the 2030 season. Edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson received a four-year, $180 million extension last season, while Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell also signed four-year deals exceeding $100 million each.

Looking ahead, the Lions are projected to have the sixth-best salary cap situation in the NFL for the upcoming offseason, with an estimated $93 million in available space. This financial flexibility could facilitate future negotiations, potentially leading to LaPorta remaining with the team.
