The third season of Taylor Sheridan's "Lioness" premiered with a jarring episode titled "The Spider and the Fly," immediately placing CIA operative Joe McNamara, portrayed by Zoe Saldaña, in a life-threatening situation. The episode begins with a deceptive sense of normalcy, showing Joe engaging in domestic life with her husband, Neal, and daughters, Kate and Charlie, a rare occurrence given her demanding career. This brief domesticity is shattered when Joe is ambushed and abducted just yards from her home in Fairfax, Virginia, while on a call with CIA spymaster Kaitlyn Meade, played by Nicole Kidman.
A Mission in Ukraine
The narrative then shifts six months earlier to a dangerous mission in Donetsk, Ukraine. Joe is tasked with extracting Aleksi Yurimov, a high-value target associated with Russia's military covert intelligence unit, SSD. Operating in a tunnel complex beneath an active battlefield, Joe is supported by her team, including team leader Bobby (Jill Wagner), original Lioness Cruz (Laysla De Oliveira), Tucker (LaMonica Garrett), and Two Cups (James Jordan). The operation involves Delta Force operator Cody Spears, portrayed by Taylor Sheridan himself, leading a team through a war-torn landscape.
The mission, described as a blend of "World War I and Star Wars," culminates in the successful retrieval of Yurimov. However, the human cost weighs on Joe, who reflects on the implications of their actions in a conflict that appears to be a proxy theater for larger global powers. Following the mission, Joe returns home, but her brief respite is interrupted when two men posing as state police attempt to breach her home. Joe neutralizes both assailants on her lawn, realizing her cover is blown and immediately requesting FBI assistance.
Domestic and Global Threats
Back in the present, Joe's husband, Neal, witnesses the aftermath of the violent confrontation. The episode also touches upon larger geopolitical themes through Kaitlyn Meade's husband, Errol, who discusses foreign government influence on domestic affairs and the role of AI in undermining democracy. The season introduces Grady (Ian Bohen), a Delta Force K-9 operator, whose combat-trained dogs are noted for their lethality.
