In the second episode of 'Lioness' Season 3, titled "No Sorrow Like the Survivor," CIA operative Joe McNamara finds herself abducted by individuals who appear to be Russian agents. The incident triggers a tense exchange between U.S. and Russian intelligence.

The episode flashes back to an earlier incident where Joe killed two assailants who attempted to break into her home shortly after her return from an operation in Ukraine. These assailants were identified as having Romanian passports but were later determined to be Belarusian nationals, suggesting Russian SVR involvement. This occurred shortly after the CIA had apprehended a Russian operative in Donetsk.

CIA Deputy Director Byron Westfield confronted a Russian intelligence official at a Washington D.C. restaurant, exchanging threats and discussing captured agents. Westfield, eating at the Occidental, accosted the Russian diplomat's table, seizing a glass of wine and asserting that targeting a U.S. State Department official on American soil constituted a transgression.

Meanwhile, Cruz Manuelos returns to Fort Bragg after the Ukraine mission and reconnects with Captain Josephina Carillo. Their relationship, which began during Carillo's training, has intensified. Manuelos reflects on the evolving nature of warfare, questioning the future role of human soldiers in the face of advancing drone technology and artificial intelligence.

The abduction of Joe prompts an investigation by her team, including Bobby, Tucker, Two Cups, and the QRF team. They discover spotters observing from nearby rooftops, confirming Joe's cover had been compromised. While Tucker neutralizes the spotters, Bobby, Two Cups, and Carillo escort other team members to a CIA safe house.

Joe, shaken by the home invasion, is taken to Langley for debriefing. CIA officer Kaitlyn Meade dismisses Joe's concerns about the impact on her family. In a CIA situation room, Secretary of State Edwin Mullins and White House Chief of Staff Mason discuss the abduction. Joe suggests the operative from Ukraine, who provided information on Russian spy Aleksi Yurimov in a previous episode, is the key to understanding how her cover was blown. The decision is made to extract this operative for questioning.

Separately, Joe informs her family about the situation. Arriving late at night at a safe house, she shares an emotional reunion with her husband, Neal, expressing apologies for how her work impacts their lives.

Carillo, still new to espionage, receives a sympathetic look from Cruz after the attack on Joe, with Cruz remarking, "Welcome to the black side."
