Lionel Richie's recent health issues have caused significant alarm among his children, who are reportedly "crazy scared they could lose him," according to insiders speaking to the Daily Mail. The 77-year-old music icon was recently admitted to intensive care and underwent tests for cardiac-related issues after abruptly halting two concerts.
Concert Interruptions and Hospitalization
The first incident occurred in June when Richie, during his Sing A Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire in St. Paul, told the audience he felt "dizzy." Paramedics met him backstage and transported him to a hospital. Two months later, in St. Louis, he appeared to struggle with standing and breathing during a performance, leading to his admission to intensive care. He spent four days in the hospital, prompting fears among fans and family about his health.
Richie's children – Nicole, 44, Sofia, 28, and Miles, 32 – are said to be particularly worried about potential serious heart issues. An insider stated that his daughters have become "like moms to him," taking on a nurturing role. "His kids are always on him about taking care of himself," another source added, noting that they encourage him to slow down.
Balancing Career and Health
Despite his family's concerns, Richie remains optimistic and is back home, reportedly "doted on" by his family. However, balancing his demanding career with his health has become a growing concern. He has been juggling his current tour with his role as a judge on American Idol, a position reportedly earning him around $10 million per season.
Sources suggest Richie is "addicted" to the spotlight and the work itself, finding it difficult to sit still and loving his career momentum. "He puts his health at risk to work super hard even though he is 77 - work is like an addiction for him and he refuses to retire," one insider claimed. The financial aspect is not considered a motivator, as Richie is reportedly worth over $200 million; the drive appears to stem from his enjoyment of popularity and media attention.
His former American Idol costar, Luke Bryan, has reportedly been calling frequently to urge Richie to take a break and prioritize family over work. Even Jennifer Lopez found the demands of American Idol too taxing to balance with other commitments, stepping away after two seasons.
A History of Health Scares
Richie has generally enjoyed good health throughout his career. In the early 1990s, he underwent four throat operations for an undisclosed condition, which he later described as nearly leading to a nervous breakdown due to anxiety. This condition was eventually traced to acid reflux, and once treated, he made a full recovery. He also revealed in 2025 that he had been diagnosed with ADHD.
Looking Ahead
Now a grandfather to four grandchildren – Harlow and Sparrow with Nicole and Joel Madden, and Eloise and Henry with Sofia and Elliot Grainge – Richie is reportedly beginning to take his health more seriously. "Lionel is finally taking control of his health and making sure he's doing everything he can to be around, healthy and performing for the people he loves for many years to come," a source stated. For now, Richie is eager to return to touring, but his team will continue to monitor his health. If he is deemed fit in approximately two weeks, his tour is expected to resume.
