Lionel Richie, 77, has returned to the concert stage following a medical emergency that led him to cut short a performance last week and cancel two subsequent shows. Richie performed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday and in Detroit, Michigan, on Wednesday, resuming his "Sing a Song All Night Long" tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.
Richie posted images from the recent concerts to his Instagram account on Saturday, July 4th, stating, "Thank you for every message, every kind word, and for all your love. I’m doing well, and I’m grateful for all of you." He added, "Pittsburgh and Detroit were an absolute joy. The energy, the dancing, the faces in the crowd… we made real memories together. See you in Toronto... let’s party all night long!"
Last week, while performing at the Grand Casino in St. Paul, Minnesota, Richie experienced dizziness and ended the show early. He subsequently postponed concerts scheduled for that weekend in Chicago, Illinois, and Columbus, Ohio. Paramedics met Richie backstage and he was taken to a hospital by ambulance as a precautionary measure, according to sources. He reportedly told the audience he was feeling "dizzy" and, at one point, sat down during his performance of "Dancing On The Ceiling." A band member later informed the audience that Richie was unable to continue due to illness.
Sources close to the singer have expressed concern that Richie may be prioritizing his performances over his health. "Family, friends, and even his bandmates are definitely concerned about Lionel's health, but nobody is about to tell him to slow down," one insider told the Daily Mail. "They all want him better and to do what he loves to do." The source added that Richie's mindset is focused on returning to the road, as "Music isn't just his job; it's what keeps him going."
Richie is reportedly more concerned about fans not receiving the full show they paid for than about his own health, viewing the incident as a "temporary setback" while awaiting medical results. He expressed his hope to return to Chicago for a performance that weekend if his condition allowed.
