The trial for Lindsay Clancy, accused of strangling her three children, began Monday with the first courtroom encounter between the estranged couple, Patrick and Lindsay Clancy, since the children's deaths in January 2023. Patrick Clancy, the first witness to testify, described the family's final hours and the discovery of his children and wife in their Duxbury, Massachusetts, home.
Lindsay Clancy, who has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, is charged with three counts of first-degree murder. Her defense attorneys argue she was experiencing severe postpartum depression and psychosis at the time of the killings, potentially influenced by prescribed medications and auditory hallucinations. The prosecution contends she was not in the throes of psychosis when she killed Cora, five, Dawson, four, and eight-month-old Callan.
Patrick Clancy, dressed in a dark suit, visibly shook and gulped as he entered the courtroom and walked past his former wife, who is wheelchair-bound and receiving psychiatric treatment. He appeared to avoid looking at her until a prosecutor asked him to identify her. He remarried and moved to New York City following the tragedy.
During his testimony, Patrick recounted the moments before leaving for takeout on January 24, 2023, describing his children as normal. He recalled Dawson eating chicken nuggets, holding Callan, and kissing Cora. He stated, "Be right back" before leaving, unaware they would be his last words to his children. Upon his return, he found the second-floor bedroom door locked, forced entry, and discovered a bloody scene. He then found Lindsay outside, having jumped from a second-story window after inflicting self-harm.
Patrick detailed Lindsay's struggles with mental health following the births of their children, particularly her increasing depression and anxiety after Callan's birth. He noted that in September 2022, she began taking Zoloft and seeing a psychiatrist. By early December, he said, her condition worsened significantly, leading her to express suicidal thoughts and intrusive thoughts about harming the children, though she reportedly found these thoughts disturbing and expressed fear that something might happen to them.
Lindsay Clancy voluntarily checked into McLean psychiatric hospital on New Year's Eve 2022 but was discharged five days later. Patrick testified that on the day of the killings, Lindsay had appeared to be having one of her best days, even sharing photos with him of their children throughout the day. He stated she seemed happy playing with the children in the yard before suggesting takeout.
Video and photographic evidence presented in court depicted happier times for the Clancy family, including birthday celebrations, trips to a water park, and visits to a science museum. The images and footage reportedly stunned the courtroom into silence. Patrick became emotional while describing his children, recalling Cora's love for princesses, Dawson's obsession with Paw Patrol, and Callan as a "happy baby."
If convicted, Lindsay Clancy faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. The trial is expected to last six to eight weeks. Patrick Clancy is scheduled to testify further on Wednesday, where jurors are expected to hear his 911 call from the day of the incident.
