A fundraiser for the parents of Lindsay Clancy has surpassed $1 million in donations following the mistrial of her murder case. The online campaign, established to assist Clancy's parents, Michael and Paula Musgrove, with expenses related to attending her court proceedings, has seen contributions continue to pour in, nearly minute by minute. A new goal of $3 million has been set for the fundraiser, which was launched by a woman who is a stranger to the family.
Clancy, a former nurse, was on trial for the murder of her three young children: Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan. The trial concluded with a mistrial after a six-week period, with the jury unable to reach a unanimous verdict due to one dissenting juror. Clancy has since returned to a psychiatric hospital while prosecutors consider their next steps, which may include a retrial or a plea deal.
The defense's argument centered on postpartum psychosis and alleged failures in maternal healthcare, while the prosecution contended that Clancy intentionally killed her children. Despite the prosecution's assertions, reports indicate that 11 out of 12 jurors leaned towards the defense's perspective.
The fundraiser's organizer, Brandee Mulligan, stated that the funds are intended to support Clancy's parents with costs such as travel and accommodation as they have been attending court proceedings. Mulligan explained that the initial goal was $2 million but was increased to $3 million after the mistrial extended the legal process and required the parents to remain in the area longer. She emphasized that the money is for the Musgroves, regardless of public opinion on Clancy's case.
Mulligan launched the fundraiser without direct contact with the Musgrove family, motivated by a desire to help after watching the case unfold. She noted that GoFundMe's terms of service prohibit funds for the direct legal defense of violent crimes, leading her to focus on assisting the parents with their expenses. The Musgrove family, who previously lived in Connecticut, relocated to Duxbury, Massachusetts, to be near their daughter during the legal proceedings and have been staying in hotels. Prior to the tragedy, they resided in a home purchased for $172,000 in 1996.
GoFundMe has confirmed that the fundraiser for the Musgrove family is verified and that reports of it being disabled are inaccurate. Donations have ranged from $5 to several thousand dollars, with some anonymous and named donors contributing significant amounts. The fundraiser's description highlights that the Musgroves have had their lives uprooted and lost financial stability while supporting their daughter.
In contrast to the support for Clancy's parents, another GoFundMe campaign titled "Lindsay Clancy is an awful person!" has been created, expressing anger over the potential success of the fundraiser for her parents. Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz stated after the mistrial that the case was about seeking justice for the children and that Clancy was responsible for their "cruel, calculated killing."
