Lincoln Riley's Post-Rutgers Remarks Fail to Reassure USC Fans

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Following a narrow 42-35 victory over Rutgers, USC head coach Lincoln Riley's postgame address to his team, though spirited, did little to quell concerns about the Trojans' performance. While fragments of his speech were overheard, the team's on-field execution raised more questions than answers for fans.

The Trojans' performance featured struggles from the quarterback against Rutgers' zone coverage, a costly mistake on special teams that allowed a 40-yard pass on a fake punt, and a defense that surrendered 460 yards and multiple touchdowns to a Rutgers offense that had previously struggled. The performance cast doubt on the effectiveness of new defensive coordinator Gary Patterson.

USC appeared unprepared for the game, leading to a lackluster showing against an opponent many considered among the weakest in the Power Four. The team's flaws, which have been exposed midseason in previous years under Riley, seemed apparent early in the season.

Riley, speaking to reporters after the game, attributed the close call largely to a momentum shift caused by Rutgers' fake punt in the second quarter. "It kind of breathes life into them," Riley said. "Where, you know, you flip that scenario and don’t give up the fake punt, get the ball back, we were moving it pretty good at that point – go score, I mean, the air is going to be out of that stadium when you go into halftime."

He also highlighted positive plays, such as a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown by Prophet Brown, acknowledging its significance. "We made some big ones," Riley stated. "Obviously, the pick-six was massive."

Regarding a failed fourth-down conversion at the Rutgers' 17-yard line early in the fourth quarter, Riley defended the decision. "Obviously, you get a chance to use more clock, get a chance to obviously score a touchdown, get it back to a 14-point game, and the field position piece is real there too, right?" he explained. "And if you don’t convert it, you know, it’s a long ways for them to go and the game is starting to get short there."

Riley concluded by emphasizing the difficulty of winning on the road in the league, stating, "Listen, we’re not going to take road wins for granted in this league. They’re all hard."

The Trojans' performance has led to renewed scrutiny of quarterback Jayden Maiava, who has struggled with accuracy and decision-making. Patterson, brought in to bolster the defense, has also faced criticism. The upcoming game against Oregon is now viewed as a critical juncture for Riley and his team, particularly after Oregon's own inconsistent start to the season.

USC's next challenge comes at home against Oregon, a game that was anticipated as a significant matchup. However, following both teams' early-season performances, the contest may now be characterized more by the pressure on each program to prove its potential.
