Lifelong Democrat Ashamed of Party Over Immigration After Son's Death
Self-identified Democrat Elizabeth Carter testified to Congress that her party's handling of immigration is shameful, following the death of her son and daughter-in-law in a crash caused by an undocumented immigrant.
Elizabeth Carter, who described herself as a "lifelong Democrat," expressed shame regarding her party's approach to immigration during testimony before Congress. Her remarks followed the deaths of her son, William Micah Carter, and his newlywed wife, Jennifer Lower, in a fatal car crash. The incident involved a truck driven by an undocumented immigrant, identified as Rajinder Kumar.
The couple was returning from their wedding reception when their vehicle collided with a jackknifed semi-truck. Carter recounted the tragedy, stating, "Sixteen days after they were married, Billy, Jenny and her cat Bert were killed. They lost the Russian roulette game our government is forcing them to play."
During her testimony, Carter directly addressed the issue of immigration enforcement, questioning the current administration's policies. "We allowed 10 million people in under Biden. How is there a different suggestion as to how to process them, other than the same way they came into the country en masse, leaving?" she asked. She concluded her statement on the matter by saying, "I have to say, as a lifelong Democrat, I am ashamed of what my party is doing."
Rep. Brad Knott, R-NC, who questioned Carter, emphasized the importance of enforcing laws to protect families, suggesting that mass deportations might be necessary if it prevents such tragedies. "If it protects one family from having to suffer like you’ve suffered, I think that is a worthwhile endeavor," Knott stated.
The incident involving Kumar, an undocumented immigrant who had been issued a license by California, has brought renewed attention to the issue of licensed undocumented drivers on American roads. The Department of Homeland Security recently launched a tipline for the public to report suspected commercial driver's license fraud, a move aimed at preventing further accidents involving unqualified drivers. Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated that "too many American lives have been lost or permanently changed because illegal aliens who have no business being on our roads have been granted CDLs."
