Lidl Recalls Ice Cream in Nine States Due to Listeria Contamination

Lidl US is voluntarily recalling one lot of its Gelatelli Coffee & Vanilla Gelato with Coffee Sauce & Cookie Pieces due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause a serious foodborne illness.

The recall affects 16-ounce (1-pint) containers with a best-by date of March 26, 2028, universal product code (UPC) 40564897, and lot number 085261.

The product was distributed to Lidl US stores in Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and Washington D.C. between July 19, 2026, and October 15, 2026.

Lidl US initiated the recall after routine quality testing identified Listeria monocytogenes in a lab sample. The company stated that the health and safety of its customers is its top priority and regrets any inconvenience.

Consumers are advised to immediately discard the recalled gelato or return it to their nearest Lidl store for a full refund. No illnesses linked to this recall have been reported to date.

Listeria monocytogenes can be found in various environments, including soil and water, and can survive refrigeration. While many infected individuals recover without treatment, the bacteria can cause severe illness, particularly in pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, sometimes preceded by gastrointestinal issues. In severe cases, the infection can spread to the nervous system, leading to life-threatening complications. Approximately 250 deaths occur annually in the U.S. due to listeriosis.
