Liberty Facing Challenging Road Playoff Path After Recent Loss

The New York Liberty may be heading into the WNBA playoffs with a demanding road-heavy schedule, a scenario solidified after their recent 95-84 loss to the Atlanta Dream. This defeat has diminished the team's chances of securing a higher seed, meaning a potential deep playoff run will likely require overcoming tough matchups away from home.

Prior to Tuesday's games, the Liberty had several possibilities for their playoff seeding. One scenario could have seen them finish as high as the fifth seed, but this would have required specific outcomes from other teams, including losses for the Indiana Fever and splits for the Mystics, alongside a Seattle victory and a Liberty win against the Dream. However, the loss to Atlanta has made these favorable outcomes less probable.

If the Fever split their remaining games and other necessary results align, the Liberty would likely fall to the sixth seed, setting up a potential series against either the Las Vegas Aces or the Dream. In the event of a three-way tie between the Liberty, the Chicago Sky, and the Mystics, tiebreaker rules would still place the Liberty in the sixth position.

This means the Liberty are likely to face challenging opponents such as the Minnesota Lynx, the Golden State Valkyries, or the Aces. These teams boast some of the league's highest offensive ratings this season. The Liberty's record against these three teams this season stands at 5-5, including a Commissioner's Cup championship win over Las Vegas.

Last season, the Liberty also experienced the difficulties of being a lower seed in the playoffs. They opened their series on the road in Phoenix, winning Game 1 before dropping Game 2 at home and ultimately losing the deciding game on the road. This marked one of only two playoff series where the Liberty were the lower seed since their current core was assembled, the other being the 2023 Finals against the Aces. They have yet to win a series as the lower seed.

The upcoming regular-season finale against the Dream on Wednesday presents a final opportunity for the Liberty to influence their seeding and potentially avoid the highest-seeded opponents to mitigate the impact of a challenging midseason stretch that saw them lose eight of ten games.

During Monday's game, after trailing by three points at halftime, the Liberty were outscored by eight points in the third quarter. Dream forward Angel Reese, who scored 18 points in the matchup, reportedly sensed fatigue in the Liberty players and encouraged her team to continue applying pressure. Jonquel Jones also scored 18 points for the Liberty in the same game.

"I think they’re a really good team, and we talked about just using this as a little mini-series for us before we go into the playoffs — and being able to bounce back, being able to learn from this loss tonight and coming out and being able to get the win the next time we play them," Jones stated.

The Liberty were playing the second night of a back-to-back leading into the loss, despite having won 10 of their previous 13 games, including victories against the Lynx and Fever. The sentiment of Reese's observation about fatigue, however, underscored the physical demands of the game.

The Liberty's path forward appears demanding, with their playoff seeding likely to necessitate a difficult road through higher-ranked opponents.
