Libertarian tech investor Scott Banister has committed $40 million to the political organization Make Liberty Win, intending to combat the influence of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in state legislative races across the United States. The funding, described as an "eight-figure spending nuke" by Fox News Digital, has already begun to be allocated across nine states: Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, New Hampshire, West Virginia, and Montana. Make Liberty Win plans to expand its efforts to at least a dozen states.
The organization's campaign focuses on mobilizing student and youth activists for door-to-door outreach, aiming to contact over two million voters in key states. According to a press release, the initiative seeks to "stem the tide of the far-left" by countering what it describes as self-described socialists running and winning within the Democratic Party, citing examples such as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
This influx of capital comes at a critical juncture for Republicans. While the GOP holds an advantage nationally, the Republican State Leadership Committee projected in late August that Democrats were expected to outspend Republicans in state races by a three-to-one margin. Make Liberty Win's substantial funding could help mitigate this projected financial disparity.
Make Liberty Win operates with a libertarian ideology, advocating for a smaller federal government and the devolution of power to state legislatures. The organization's strategy involves direct voter engagement through door-knocking and phone banking rather than direct financial contributions to candidates.
At $40 million, Banister's contribution represents a significant investment, particularly for state legislative races. For comparison, the average U.S. House candidate spent $1.8 million on a campaign in 2024, with federal races typically incurring higher costs than state-level contests. The total amount pledged by Banister may also serve as a floor, with the potential for additional funding from Banister or other donors.
"Make Liberty Win will execute a comprehensive strategy to counter socialist Democrats and win at the state level, where political movements are built and every American can make a difference," stated Make Liberty Win CEO Jeff Frazee.
