Lib Dem Conference Marked by Dullness and Clichés, Observer Claims

The Liberal Democrat conference in Brighton was characterized by a lack of engagement and a reliance on clichés, according to a report by parliamentary sketchwriter Quentin Letts.

Letts, writing for the Daily Mail, claimed that despite an estimated 5,000 attendees, the conference hall was sparsely populated. He noted a perceived absence of younger members and described the speeches as "drab" and filled with "earnest wheedlers." The repetitive use of words like "holistic" and phrases such as "quick fix solutions" were highlighted as examples of the conference's uninspired rhetoric.

One particularly tedious procedural moment involved the repeated instruction to "Pop your cards down again," which lasted for 20 minutes due to a lack of participants, accompanied by Vivaldi's pizzicato music played over the sound system.

A brief change of pace occurred with a speech from the party's home affairs spokesman, Max Wilkinson MP. Wilkinson's entrance was accompanied by "Star Wars music," and he engaged the audience with critiques of Robert Jenrick and a challenge to Reform UK's Zia Yusuf. Letts, however, recounted a personal anecdote suggesting Wilkinson was not particularly courageous in a past encounter.

Mention was made of a speech by 13-year-old grammar schoolgirl Kitty Dawson on online harm, which received applause from a party that, according to Letts, disapproves of grammar schools.

The conference concluded with a contentious debate on trans rights, during which "trans people bellowed their demands to go on using girls’ changing rooms." Delegates who resisted this view were reportedly criticized by another attendee who complained of being "misgendered."
