Letitia James Spars With Challenger Saritha Komatireddy in Fiery Debate

New York Attorney General Letitia James engaged in a spirited debate with her opponent, Saritha Komatireddy, highlighting sharp disagreements on the attorney general's record and priorities. Komatireddy, a former federal prosecutor, criticized James for her handling of violent crime, Medicaid fraud, sexual assault, and mental illness issues.

During the debate, James reportedly responded to some of the criticisms by stating "That's not my job" and frequently invoked the name of former President Donald Trump. Komatireddy argued that James' focus on civil matters and national political cases, rather than criminal justice issues affecting New Yorkers, disqualifies her for the role.

Komatireddy also pointed to James' past investigations, particularly those involving Trump's business dealings. The New York Post reported that James vowed in her 2018 primary campaign to investigate Trump, and subsequently pursued a civil fraud case alleging he overstated asset values when borrowing money. A former prosecutor, Daniel Wiesenfeld, claimed James pushed for investigations into Trump despite investigators finding no evidence.

James' office has seen a reported 27% increase in major crime in New York City since she took office. Komatireddy's campaign has emphasized her experience as a federal prosecutor of terrorists and as DEA chief of staff as qualifications for leading the state's top law enforcement office.

The debate underscored the differing approaches of the two candidates, with James defending her record and Komatireddy challenging her opponent's focus and effectiveness in addressing crime and other issues impacting New Yorkers.
