Leo Carlsson Addresses Doubts After $90 Million Offer Sheet Drama
Ducks forward reaffirms commitment to Anaheim despite summer contract negotiations.
Anaheim Ducks forward Leo Carlsson has addressed the contract negotiations that took place over the summer, stating that he always intended to remain with the team. In July, Carlsson accepted a $90 million offer sheet from the Philadelphia Flyers, a move that drew attention given his ongoing contract discussions with the Ducks.
Three days before the Ducks' season opener, Carlsson released a letter to fans titled "Dear Ducks Fans," explaining his decision. "The contract negotiations over the summer were a lot to deal with for everybody, but when all is said and done, Anaheim is ultimately where I want to be for the rest of my life," Carlsson wrote. "That to me was always a no-brainer. This was a unique situation, but I of course always wanted to be here." He also expressed his fondness for Orange County, citing the restaurants, people, weather, and environment.
In a recent conversation with Eric Stephens of The Athletic, Carlsson discussed the pressure that may come with his contract. "I don't think it's going to be anything crazy, to be honest. That's just what I think," Carlsson said. "Obviously, a couple of my chirps here and there probably. And then I just have to show it with my game as well. See how it is."
Early in the season, Carlsson has already accumulated five points and scored a goal in the Ducks' home opener against the Florida Panthers. Fans have shown their support, with Carlsson receiving a strong ovation during pregame introductions. "We have great fans here," Carlsson commented. "It feels great every time that happens. You know, you feel like you're doing something good. I love the fans. Hopefully they love me as well, so it's fun."
Carlsson stated that his actions, including signing an extension that makes him the highest-paid player in the NHL for the current season, were intended to demonstrate his commitment to the organization. "It's the organization and me having the idea to just really show everybody that I really want to be here if there's still any doubters out there," he said. "Got a great response from it as well. Happy I did it."
As of the start of the season, Carlsson's contract has the highest cap hit in the NHL. However, this will be surpassed by Macklin Celebrini and Cale Makar with their upcoming contract extensions.
