Lenny Kravitz, 62, has revealed the disciplined regimen behind his enduring physique, emphasizing a natural approach to fitness that eschews performance-enhancing substances.
Kravitz shared with Men's Health that a significant shift in his health occurred before he turned 50, a period he described as feeling “bloated and out of sorts.” In response, he relocated to Miami for six months to live with his personal trainer and close friend, Dodd Romero, with whom he has worked for nearly three decades.
Romero, who also trains other notable figures such as Denzel Washington and Jennifer Lopez, implemented a demanding workout plan for Kravitz that included gym sessions and cycling. This intensified routine reportedly helped Kravitz feel revitalized and recommitted to his well-being.
Now, while on a world tour, Kravitz maintains his fitness by contacting Romero for guidance from gyms globally. He adheres to a routine of working out five to six times per week, with each session lasting between 45 and 60 minutes.
"You realize as you keep spending time on the planet that aging is not how you thought it would be," Kravitz told Men's Health. "Now I’m in better shape than I was 10 years ago, 20 years ago. Ten years from now, I will be in better shape than I am now."
Kravitz's fitness philosophy centers on achieving a sculpted, lean physique, which he likens to "Spider-Man meets Bruce Lee." This aesthetic goal influences his training, with Romero employing varied weight and repetition schemes rather than a standard set number. This method is intended to support ligament health and preserve muscle mass.
For example, Kravitz might begin with bicep curls using a lighter weight, performing up to 55 repetitions as a warm-up, before gradually increasing the weight and decreasing repetitions, finishing with a heavier weight for fewer reps. This approach is also applied to his core workouts, which often include exercises like hanging leg raises, planks, and various crunches, performed for multiple sets of 21 repetitions.
"All this is natural: no peptides, no human growth hormone, no testosterone," Kravitz stated. He acknowledged that while other methods exist, he prefers a natural path achievable through consistent exercise and diet, though he admits it requires more effort.
Kravitz does not rely on fitness trackers, instead using his waistline and how his clothes fit as indicators of his physical condition. He cited his friend Denzel Washington's phrase, "The pants don't lie," as a personal benchmark.
His dietary habits include intermittent fasting, largely due to a preference for not eating immediately upon waking. He follows a low-carbohydrate, predominantly vegan and raw food diet, incorporating meals such as egg white omelets, protein shakes, and salads, supplemented with amino acids.
Reflecting on aging, Kravitz compares it to maintaining a classic car, suggesting that the outcome depends on how one cares for themselves over time, irrespective of age.
