Lena Dunham has welcomed her first child, a baby girl, via surrogate, the actress and writer announced. Dunham shared the news in an op-ed for Vogue, published on Wednesday, detailing her journey to parenthood with her husband, Luis Felber.

Dunham, 40, stated that her daughter arrived 13 days past her due date, coinciding with a solar eclipse and a meteor shower. In her writing, she described the moment of birth, focusing on the surrogate's concentration and the eventual cry of her newborn. "Hello I said. 'I'm your mama. You... you look nothing like I thought you would, but exactly right. We've been waiting for you, do you know that? It was so nice of you to come,'" Dunham recalled telling her daughter.

The "Girls" creator has been open about her past reproductive health challenges. She has previously spoken about her years-long battle with endometriosis and underwent a hysterectomy in 2018. At the time, Dunham wrote in an essay for Vogue that she had her uterus and cervix removed after undergoing numerous surgeries.

Following the hysterectomy, Dunham expressed interest in exploring options such as surrogacy or adoption. She also mentioned investigating whether her remaining ovaries had viable eggs. In a 2025 interview with the U.K. Times, she hinted at her family's expansion plans, stating, "I will say we’re in the process of expanding our family in new ways. I want to safely meet our children and then figure out how to talk about it."
