Dunham, 40, has previously been open about her fertility challenges and chronic illness, including undergoing a hysterectomy at age 31. She described the process of connecting with her surrogate in the Vogue piece, noting the quick progression from their initial meeting to the surrogacy arrangement.
She detailed the moment she first met her daughter, who arrived 13 days past her due date, coinciding with a solar eclipse and a meteor shower. Dunham recounted sitting on a hospital bed and hearing her baby's cry before seeing her face.
The actress has written extensively about her experiences with endometriosis and its effect on her aspirations for motherhood. In her 2026 memoir, "Famesick," she stated that the loss of her fertility prompted an intense search for a baby. During the pandemic, she underwent egg extraction procedures, describing periods of oscillating between considering adoption and seeking a surrogate.
In June 2025, Dunham hinted at upcoming family expansion to The Times, stating they were "in the process of expanding our family in new ways" but did not offer specific details, emphasizing a desire to meet their children privately first.
An earlier essay from 2020 published in Harper's Magazine touched on the irony of accepting her inability to conceive, suggesting this acceptance might be a prerequisite for parenthood. She wrote at the time that she believed she had gained wisdom she could pass on to a child.
