Lena Dunham Welcomes First Child, Shares Details of Surrogacy Journey

Lena Dunham, the creator of the HBO series "Girls," has welcomed her first child with husband Luis Felber. Dunham shared the news in an op-ed for Vogue, revealing that their daughter was born via surrogate. The couple temporarily relocated to New York City to be near their surrogate, staying in an Airbnb during the final weeks of the pregnancy.

Dunham, 40, described the moment of her daughter's arrival, noting that the child was 13 days past her due date. "I sat on a hospital bed, between the legs of a woman I hadn’t known a year ago, waiting for a glimpse of this person who I had been waiting for with something related to patience, but also none at all," Dunham wrote. She recounted seeing her daughter's face for the first time, describing the experience as leaving her "bashful and dizzy with joy."

The process was not without its logistical challenges. Dunham admitted that she and Felber had overlooked extending their Airbnb reservation, not anticipating their daughter's delayed arrival. The rental expired, and the subsequent two weeks were booked by other vacationers. "As we passed her due date, the days became liquid and squishy, too long and without any form," she explained.

Dunham and Felber, who married in 2021, had largely kept their surrogacy journey private. However, Dunham had previously spoken about her desire to become a mother, particularly after undergoing a hysterectomy in 2025. She described the experience of her fertility ending as a "very quick, sharp cut-off" but expressed her intention to expand their family "in new ways."

Five years ago, Dunham moved from Los Angeles to London, where she and Felber now reside in a four-story townhouse. She has described the London home as both a "home base" and a "creative escape." The couple also maintains a "forever home" in Connecticut, located near Dunham's parents, artists Carroll Dunham and Laurie Simmons. This Connecticut home, built during the COVID-19 pandemic, was designed with significant input from her parents, reflecting Dunham's understanding of her aesthetic.

Dunham has spoken positively about her relocation to London, noting that the city offered a sense of a fresh start and a freedom from external perceptions. She found London's differences reassuring and its vast streets conducive to a new beginning.
