Lena Dunham Welcomes Daughter Via Surrogate After Endometriosis Battle

Lena Dunham and her husband, Luis Felber, have welcomed a baby girl via surrogate, the actress announced Wednesday in an op-ed for Vogue. The birth marks the culmination of a years-long journey toward motherhood, which included a difficult battle with endometriosis, a failed IVF cycle, and a hysterectomy.

Dunham, 40, has been open about her struggles with endometriosis, a chronic condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. The illness caused her severe pain and led to a career hiatus in 2016. At the time, she stated that her body was signaling the need for rest. Endometriosis affects up to one in 10 women and can lead to infertility.

Her gynecological issues eventually led to a hysterectomy at age 31 in an attempt to alleviate the debilitating pain. The procedure removed her uterus and cervix, along with one ovary, though doctors were able to preserve the other ovary. This preserved ovary offered the possibility of future pregnancy through surrogacy.

Following the hysterectomy and a subsequent breakup with her then-boyfriend Jack Antonoff, Dunham took a break from dating and focused on her desire to become a parent. She later discovered her remaining ovary was still producing eggs, which could potentially be fertilized with donor sperm for a surrogate pregnancy.

However, this path also presented challenges. Dunham revealed that five of her six harvested eggs were non-viable, and the sixth had chromosomal issues. She described this news as a significant disappointment, noting that the process of trying to conceive had been emotionally taxing and expensive.

During this period, Dunham also sought treatment for an opioid addiction that developed after her hysterectomy. She eventually found a path toward recovery and a new relationship.

Dunham met Felber during the COVID-19 lockdown, and the couple became engaged in September 2021. They married later that month in London.

In earlier interviews, Dunham had spoken about coming to terms with not being able to carry her own children, which had once been her dream. She expressed gratitude for the evolving ways families can be built and her excitement about becoming a parent, regardless of the method.

Describing the birth, Dunham wrote about being in awe of her surrogate's strength and focus during delivery. She recounted the moment she first saw her daughter, describing her as perfect, and expressed being "dizzy with joy."

Dunham praised her surrogate, stating she felt no jealousy but rather admiration for the woman who carried her child. She also shared that the experience brought her closer to her husband and their new family.
