Lena Dunham Welcomes Baby Via Surrogate, Reflects on Endometriosis Journey

Lena Dunham has welcomed her first child, a daughter, born via surrogate with her husband, Luis Felber. The actress shared the news and her first words to her newborn in an op-ed for Vogue.

Dunham revealed that her midwife encouraged her to speak to the baby upon meeting her. Her first words were, "Hello. I’m your mama. You look nothing like I thought you would, but exactly right. We’ve been waiting for you, do you know that? It was so nice of you to come." She expressed her joy and bashfulness, feeling "dizzy with joy" at the baby's arrival.

This milestone comes after Dunham underwent a total hysterectomy in 2018 due to severe endometriosis-related pain, which had ended her "dream" of carrying a child herself. She had previously spoken about coming to terms with this reality, acknowledging that while it was a significant grief, it also brought relief.

In an April appearance on "Today with Jenna and Sheinelle," Dunham discussed the emotional weight of her surgery and her evolving perspective on motherhood. "Some people don't dream about being mothers, but I had, and it was a big part of my identity that I was going to do it someday in that way," she said. "The amazing thing is, since then, I have met so many people who built their families in so many different ways, and I have really come to a place where I feel really excited Whatever way it happens, I will feel so grateful."

Dunham also reflected on her surrogacy journey, stating she felt no jealousy over not carrying the child. Instead, she felt a sense of awe toward the baby for being in the care of someone who radiated safety. She had previously hinted at expanding her family in an interview with The Sunday Times in June 2025, though she remained private about the specifics until the family's arrival.

Dunham's decision to have a hysterectomy followed years of surgeries and alternative treatments for endometriosis. Doctors discovered during the procedure that she had other medical issues contributing to her pain, including retrograde bleeding and an ovary nestled near nerves that affected her mobility. In 2018, she told Vogue that despite feeling choiceless before, she now recognized she had choices regarding starting a family.

In a 2020 essay for Harper's Magazine, Dunham wrote about the profound impact of not being able to carry a child, the financial and emotional toll of fertility treatments, and the acceptance that some natural impossibilities cannot be overcome. She concluded that her ability to accept this reality might be what makes her deserving of being a parent.

Dunham married musician Luis Felber in a London ceremony in September 2021. The couple, who met during COVID-19 lockdown, were set up on a blind date and reportedly connected immediately, talking for eight hours straight. Dunham first publicly confirmed her relationship with Felber in an April 2021 interview with The New York Times, calling him "the greatest person I've ever met."
