Legendary Hollywood Composer Linked to Fatal Crash Involving Teen Driver

A luxury Range Rover, leased by acclaimed Hollywood composer Harry Gregson-Williams, was involved in a fatal collision that killed a Nobu Malibu chef, according to reports. The vehicle, driven by a 16-year-old, struck the parked car of Ryo Uchimiya, 51, on Pacific Coast Highway near the celebrity-favored restaurant.

The collision occurred around 6:50 a.m. on a Saturday. Authorities stated the teenage driver, whose name has not been released due to their age, appeared to be speeding before the Range Rover veered across the fog line and impacted Uchimiya's vehicle. The suspect vehicle is a 2026 Land Rover registered to Gregson-Williams, DMV records indicate.

Gregson-Williams, a 64-year-old British-born composer, provided a brief statement expressing sympathy for the family of the victim, noting, "This family is grieving just as the other family." The connection between the composer, the teenager, and the reason the minor was driving the vehicle remain unclear.

Gregson-Williams has a prolific career in film scoring, with credits including the Shrek franchise, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Martian, and Gladiator II. He was recently seen at the Los Angeles premiere of Animals, a new Netflix thriller directed by and starring Ben Affleck, just two days before the fatal crash.

Uchimiya, a chef at Nobu Malibu for approximately 25 years, was reportedly in the back seat of his car, believed to be resting before a shift, when the collision occurred. The impact caused a chain reaction involving several other parked vehicles. Uchimiya died at the scene from multiple blunt-force injuries.

A severely damaged black car parked on the side of the road, having been struck from behind by a dark SUV.

Friends of Uchimiya described him as a kind and adventurous individual, known for his culinary skills and passion for skiing and climbing. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

The incident has brought renewed attention to the safety concerns along the stretch of Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, which has seen a significant number of crash-related fatalities in recent years.
